TUSCANY, ITALY – Italian oil service  company Saipem has bid for the job of scrapping the hulk of the Costa Concordia cruise liner, which capsized off the Tuscany coast more than two years ago, a source close to the matter said on Thursday.

An Italian junior minister said last year that demolishing the ship would cost around 350 million euros ($475 million).

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – The Metrodome roof started to become a thing of the past on Saturday January 18, as crews deflated the roof.

Demolition crews say the snow helped the deflation process and it was done in less than 35 minutes. It started at 7:15 a.m.

Authorities were monitoring wind speeds and said if they were higher than 15 mph the deflation would have been put off.

The deflation was nothing like the implosion of Met Center in Bloomington in the 1990′s.  “It is different,” she says. “You know it’s the roof deflating. It’s not going to be like a one, two, three, deflate,” Michele Kelm-Helgen, the chairwoman of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority said.

MONTICELLO, NEW YORK — The wreckage from Mayor Gordon Jenkins’ ill-fated decision to demolish Monticello’s old village court continues to grow.

First, the state Department of Environmental Conservation arrested six people for illegal dumping, and then the state Department of Labor halted removal of the debris because of asbestos.

Now the demolition contractor company’s owner, who was arrested along with five other people for dumping debris on Fairground Road, is suing the village because his company, Sams Property Management, has not received its $5,000 fee. Read More at…

The private equity firm Maxim Partners based in Hinsdale, Ill., has joined with G.W. “Bill” Dietrich and William “Billy” Dietrich to form Bobcat Disposal Companies. The goal of the newly formed company, headquartered in Sarasota, Fla., will be to acquire and integrate residential, commercial and industrial solid waste companies throughout the country under the Bobcat name.

Bill Dietrich, chairman and CEO of the newly formed company, most recently served as executive chairman of one of the largest private solid waste companies in North America from December 2007 until March 2013. Previously, he was CEO of Onyx North America/Superior Services from 1994 through 2004, where he is said to have completed some 150 acquisitions, leading to an increase in revenues from $63 million to more than $1 billion. Ship demolition activities slowed down in 2013 over the previous year, but the average age of ships getting scrapped is getting younger, according to French environmental watchdog Robin des Bois.

A total of 1,119 ships were demolished in 2013, a decrease of 16% in the number of ships scrapped and 20% in tonnage of metal recycled.

The environmental watchdog also noted that the average age of ships being taken out of service is getting younger at 28 years old in 2013 compared to 31 years old back in 2006.

In my first column of the New Year I stated that “CAT WILL DUMP NDA 2014 CONVENTION.” This is incorrect and a bad choice of words. Cat will exhibit at this year’s convention Feburary 22-25th Las Vegas, NV.

Cat will not host a cocktail party at the convention and this information lead to a misunderstanding that Cat would not attend the convention. There was no malicious intent in the article. We all know that Cat is a great company and has done a lot of good for the Demolition Industry.

This total does not include fees paid to NDA for space rental at each of the annual conventions, along with transportation and logistics expenses for the shipment and handling of our equipment, to the many venues that hosted previous conventions. To be clear, Caterpillar will be displaying our equipment and promoting our services at the upcoming 2014 NDA convention in Las Vegas.
